The Barbara McDowell Foundations has engaged Allen Ripp, President of a well-respected public relations firm, to help the Foundation receive publicity for our 2020 grant making efforts.

In conjunction with the milestone of celebrating its tenth-year anniversary, the Barbara McDowell Foundation has embarked on its first-ever fundraising campaign.

The Barbara McDowell and Gerald S. Hartman Foundation has selected four organizations for 2020 grants, each receiving an award of $40,000.

Each of the 2019 Barbara McDowell Foundation grantees has submitted their final grant reports as of August 1.

The Barbara McDowell Foundation is excited to announce the Board of Directors approved the addition of five new members by unanimous vote on August 14, 2019.

All 2019 Barbara McDowell Foundation grantees were contacted in July in accordance with the Foundation’s requirements and reported with respect to the progress of their case through the third quarter of their grant cycle.

The Barbara McDowell Foundation received 72 applications for its 2020 grant awards. This compares with 54 received last year and is significantly more than prior years.

Children’s Rights received a grant from the Foundation in 2018 in connection with its lawsuit (M.B. v. Corsi) against the Missouri Department of Social Services addressing the unsafe administration of psychotropic medications to children in foster care which were alleged to cause an unreasonable risk of serious physical and psychological harm.

At the Tenth Anniversary celebration of the Foundation, Katharine Deabler-Meadows, a Staff Attorney at the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (“NCLEJ”), talked about one of the cases that that is being litigated by NCLEJ, Drinker Biddle, New Economy, and the Foundation as part of the Foundation’s High Impact Project.

At the Tenth Anniversary celebration of the Foundation, Kate Jastram, an attorney with the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies, a grantee of the Foundation, talked about one of the immigration cases that her organization has been litigating with the assistance of a grant received from the Foundation.

At the Tenth Anniversary celebration of the Foundation, Judge Patricia Millett of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, who was a friend of Barbara’s and a colleague at the United States Justice Department’s Solicitor General’s Office, gave a talk about the significant and positive work that the Foundation and its High Impact Pro Bono Initiative have achieved over the past ten years to honor the memory of Barbara.

At the Tenth Anniversary celebration of the Foundation held at Drinker Biddle’s event space in its Washington, D.C. office, Jerry Hartman, President of the Barbara McDowell Foundation, gave a short presentation about Barbara’s beliefs in social justice and the history of the Foundation.

Prisoner’s Legal Services of Massachusetts, a 2019 grantee, has filed suit in their grant funded case challenging the Massachusetts law, M.G.L. c. 123, § 35, that authorizes the involuntary civil commitment in Department of Correction prisons of men but not women suffering from alcohol and substance use disorders.
