The Barbara McDowell Foundation and Public Interest Law Center Welcomes New Vice President Maria Imperial
The Barbara McDowell Foundation is excited to announce the appointment of Maria Imperial as its new Vice President. This leadership addition marks a significant step in the Foundation’s growth, enhancing its ability to fulfill its mission of promoting public interest law and social justice.
Maria brings a wealth of experience from both the legal and nonprofit sectors. Most recently, she served as Commissioner of the New York State Division of Human Rights, where she led a $28 million state agency, designing and implementing initiatives to combat hate, bias, sexual harassment, and disability rights. Previously, she was the CEO of the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester, securing multi-million-dollar funding for critical programs and advancing diversity and inclusion efforts. Additionally, Maria was the Executive Director of the New York City Bar Justice Center, further demonstrating her commitment to legal advocacy and social change.
As Vice President of the Barbara McDowell Foundation, Maria will assist in guiding and overseeing executive responsibilities, while providing strategic direction to ensure the Foundation’s continued alignment with its mission. Her leadership and expertise in fundraising, governance, and team management will enhance the Foundation's efforts to advance justice and public interest law.
A Harvard Law School graduate, Maria also holds degrees from Harvard College and the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Throughout her distinguished career, Maria has been dedicated to increasing access to justice and building stronger, more inclusive communities.
